>> i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on a monday and if you are heading out on the road this morning, be aware that the view through the windshield could be a little murky. >> heavy fog is causing poor visibility in much of the bay area. anne makovec is in san francisco near the bay bridge to give us a look at conditions there and we can still see the fog behind you. >> it is really bad out here. you know, we talk about fog. a lot of mornings, especially at this hour, but today, it really is exceptionally foggy. you can see the bay bridge behind me. you can barely see it. you can see some of the lights shrouded in fog. we took pictures a little bit earlier at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see how difficult it is for drivers to see if one of those situations where you're coming up on the car in front of you and suddenly you have to break. if those lights just come up on you very quickly. fog advisories on the bay area

bridges, particularly troublesome in the vacaville davis area, according to the chp, visibility at less than 100 feet and the chp also mentioned 580 east being a difficult commute. so if you can hold off on your commute, i'd recommend doing that until a little bit later on in the day. right now live in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs5. and somewhere out there, there is a full moon, believe it or not. >> we just can't see it through all the fog. right. >> that's right. you can't see much of anything this morning. we've seen fog a lot of mornings, but not like this. i've never seen it this foggy when i first walked into work at the bay bridge toll plaza and it's hard to tell where we are this morning. there's no big delays, but take it extra easy through the macarthur maze, very difficult to e see and makes driving conditions super dangerous.

chp issued fog advisories for pretty much every bridge, and we have our clear spots as well. we can see that westbound 580 drive as you make your way through livermore. let's go to our maps, the cartinas bridge, there is a fog advisory, and also mention chp noted that interstate 80 commute from vacaville to davis. and bridges and roadways across the bay area and they go ahead and issue the dense fog advisories, different from the one issued by the national weather service and it is super thick on a lot of roads. even though these are showing up traffic moving at the limit, you will want to take it slow. 18 minutes on westbound 80 from the carkinas bridge to the maize. b.a.r.t.

still on time. ace, muni and weary, so far good on this back to work monday morning and for more on these foggy conditions and a butch of rain on the way, he's -- here's brian. the moisture air in the atmosphere is getting weighted down. we have the fog this morning. remember yesterday it was slow to clear. today it's not going to take as long to clear. in the early going we will have low visibilities but later in the day, mostly sunny skies. mid-60s for the bay area. a notch cooler than it was yesterday and the extended forecast will increase clouds on tuesday night and that was going to lead to rain and wind wednesday, thursday and friday and it looks as if it's going to be wet all the way through the weekend. we'll have more details later in the newscast. americans are expected to shell out more than one billion dollars when they go shopping

online today. >> retailers are hoping cyber monday will be as successful as black friday and cbs5 reporter cate cauguiran is in the news room reporting there is a downside to online shopping. >> reporter: if you can believe that. but that's according to some experts. cyber monday proponents say avoiding the crowds, shopping from home are all the perks to the one click shop. one thing for sure is technology is a game changer for the shopping industry. let me tell you what's new this year. one in hour will use mobile devices to find the best deals. that's nearly double from last year. retailers are anticipating 129 million consumers to shop from their offices today. hear why you may want to second guess that on online deal. >> the downside is you don't get to touch and feel things and especially for younger consumers who have less experience shopping and also

negotiationings that looming -- negotiations, the looming deadline. economists say if the u.s. goes off the the so called fiscal cliff, it will increase the likelihood of another recession. lawmakers say they're willing to compromise. >> when you're $16 trillion in debt, the only pledge we should be making to each other is avoid becoming brief and republicans should put revenue on the table. >> the big questions are whether republicans are open top some forms of tax increases and whether democrats will consider cuts to entitlement programs. e elected officials including the governor and all the legislatures are getting their pay cut by 5%. for example, pay for the attorney general palilia harris is being cut to $143,000. that's a hundred thousand less

than her replacement. but people don't run for office for the money. >> they're doing it because of a variety of factors, including the pursuit of power, the ambition to go to higher places and also of course hopefully public service that they want to give back to their community. >> the california citizens compensation commission ordered the pay cuts and they cut per diem pay by 18%. carbon monoxide sent more than a dozen people to the hospital in san francisco. the fire department was called to 1223 courtland street about last night over a carbon monoxide leak. there were 14 people at the home that were taken to the hospital. they're expected to be okay, but city officials and pg&e are still trying to figure out what caused the problem. >> when we arrived, we checked the residence with our air monitors and we found no sign of carbon monoxide. however, we checked the residence and they had shoddy

showed -- showed signs of carbon monoxide on them. >> it's a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. they now order carbon monoxide detector in all homes. a fight between teens ended with one boy's father opening fire. randy williams went to the party and shot a 17-year-old boy. witnesses reported hearing at least 6 shot. when police arrived, the teenager was dead. williams was arrested at his home. two women became the latest homicide victims, both shot to death in east oakland early sunday morning. that brings the number of murders this weekend to four and a total of 115 people killed just this year. three people from the bay area are among four killed in a crash near placerville. a prius and a mini van collided head on along highway 50 last

night. a man, woman and child all from san francisco died in the prius, a 4-year-old girl in the van also died. the prius veered into oncoming traffic. it's not clear yet why. 5:09 now, violent protests broke out in bangladesh after a factory fire killed 112 workers there. a lack of emergency exits trapped many inside the building and some of the dead jumped from the upper windows to escape. hundreds of factories have been closed down because of widespread demonstrations. unions in bangladesh have complained about unsafe factors. the company that owns the factory that burned makes clothing for western retail chains like wal-mart. days of violent clashes between supporters and opponents o of president morsi. a teenager was killed and dozens more were injured in damanor yesterday when they

stormed local offices in muslim brotherhood. he decided to make him immune to oversight including the courts. >> to assume this kind of power is unacceptable to the united states of america. many other u.s. lawmakers agree even though they appreciate morsi's help in the cease fire. he was elected back in june after the oust of mu bar ekg. people d -- mumbarek. chris moore plans to retire at the end of january. tonight's community meeting is set for 8:00 at the community center. it's the first of four meetings set over the next couple of week. a san francisco couples

weld we would all show up for work. >> i don't need power ball. i got this traffic gig. it's foggy this morning if you're just waking up, super foggy in fact. i haven't seen it this foggy in some of the bridges for quite a while. this is san jose. we sent photographers out, this is one o of the clear spots. let's go to the map. here's that fog we've been talking about, this is across the golden gate bridge, a little bit slow right now on the approach between 580 and the toll plaza. you can see the headlights there. this is back to work after a while for some folks. if you're heading toward ffo, this is what it looks like on 101. past campbell, it looks okay as far as accidents, no major road work to slow you down.

280 is pretty quiet as well. interstate 80, they have issued a dense fog advisory for the carcinas bridge. particularly when you get a little bit further north heading toward vacaville, davis, cp noticed it's especially thick in spots there. milpitas, 880, coming around that bend, so far so good out toward san jose. that is a check of the time saver traffic. the numbers this morning, we're starting out at least a little bit warmer than we have lately because with the low clouds acts as a blanket, in the low 50s in oakland, and in the headlines we'll be looking at the fog to dissipate a little bit later today. numbers will be in the mid-60s for the most part in this area. but when it starts to rain, it will pour, starting tuesday

night and continuing as far as the eye can seen. the good thing is it does look to be the on and off again variety. and that's good because it gives the streams a chance to drain and get ready for the next round. in places it's clear. if you go on the other side of the coast range, out in livermore, it's clear. san jose it's clear. it's close to the bay where we're getting the fog. 67 at sunnyvale, 64 at half- moon bay. brentwood 68 today. 67 at dublin and 67 at pleasant hill. north bay looks good. 67 for santa rosa and 65 at pataloma. oakland will be up to 66. it's in the extended forecast so we have galliwasps gale -- gale watches posted.

and as we look ahead to next weekend, expect wet let's get the latest on the news. a woman faces charges for riding an endangered mammal. anna was arrested in st. peterburg, she's charged with a second-degree misdemeanor. it bans humors from molesting, harassing or disturbing any manatee. it's been on the endangered list. she says she's new to the state and was not aware of the law. we know identity theft can happen through fishing scams and dumpster diving to find documents. this one's new. it turns out everyone at the macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york had a chance to pick up some confidential information. apparently parade go ors took a closer look at the confetti and were surprised to find social security numbers, names

addresses, even worse, the papers came from local police departments and contained information about undercover cops, incident reports and details about former presidential candidates mitt romney's motorcade. >> i'm just completely in shock that, how can anyone have this type of sensitive information and why is it be shredded and distributed at the thanksgiving paid. >> the police department says it's launching an investigation and reviewing how they dispose of sensitive documents. >> that is not good. it is 5:20 right now. they play through rain, sleet and snow. >> what's the one thing that can put a profootball game on hold. you're going to e see when we come back. what's cool about your school, you can submit your nomination on our web site

in the mid-60s today with plenty of sun later. but right now fog is the problem. elizabeth. it is and that weather is affecting the morning commute. here's a live look at the traffic cameras for you. thick fog across the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge. look at pleasanton, it is nice and clear. we'll have more traffic and weather together every ten minutes coming right up. hustle back into the play and one. >> play of the day, mado gets the steal, goes through the legs, over the top of two more defenders and says take that. he went onto make the 3-point play at the foul line as well. >> and the bay area football teams on the road sunday. mixed results here. we begin with the raiders, they fell behind early. they were down 21-0 at the half. and final at the third, with a 20-yard touch to moore.

bad call late in the game led to a brawl that will lead to fines on both sides, the bengals beat the raiders. in new orleans, kyle kaepernick puts the 9ers on the board first. first time they've done that since 1995, picking off drew brees for a halftime tie and 49ers beat the saints, 31-20 and move two and a half on top of seattle in the division. a loser at miami. very nice, football players learned to play in all kinds of conditions except apparently when the debride iron's waters -- gridiron's watering systems come on. it was late in the third quarterrer when the sprinklers decided to go on. players, coaches and refs headed to dry ground until the problem blamed on a computer

this morning. good monday morning everyone, november 26th. right after turkey day i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. time is 5:30. >> drivers be aware, if you're commuting this morning, a lot of heavy fog around the bay this morning. visibility is especially bad on major bridges. cbs5 reporter, anne makovec is on the embarcadero near the bay bridge with conditions. good morning. >> reporter: good morning very foggy at ground level. that is the bay bridge above me. you can't see it very well because of the fog. it is very heavy right now. you can just see the lights of the bay bridge. this is a warning really to all drivers. we took this video, about 40 minutes ago at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see difficult for drivers right now. it's one of those situations where you're driving along and suddenly you hit that wall of fog. the chp has issued a fog advisory in fact for most of

the bay area bridges. they say it's bad in the vacaville davis area. visibility down to less than 10000 feet. they mentioned 580 east as a traffic hot spot when it comes to the foggy area. and remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle? front of you. might want to leave a little extra time for your commute in general. live in san francisco, anne makovec cbs 5. good advice there. i put out my gps on the bridge just to find out where i was on the bridge. >> kick it over to brian and find out how long, how much, and when's it going to clear up. it will be a surprise to you especially if you're in san jose, what fog. it's clear in san jose and livermore, and if you head west

toward the bay you'll hit the fog. we start out with the fog, get the sun. numbers in the 60s. right now, readings in the low 40s but look at the golden gate bridge. i hate to steal elizabeth's thunder because that's what she's going to be talking about. we have not seen any big accidents but rain shower traffic cameras are -- our traffic cameras are difficult to see. kind of this blur right now. this is a live look. you can see e a few headlights making they ware toward the pay gate. -- their way toward the pay gate. we sent photographers all around the area. traffic on 280 as you head downtown. downtown is blanketed in the stuff this morning. some of the other traffic cameras nice and clear. obviously that's not the issue right now across the golden gate bridge.

thick fog. visibility is an issue all across the span, especially when you get closer to san francisco. to our maps now, and chp issued dense fog advisories to pretty much every bridge across the bay area and they said visibility was particularly bad toward vacaville, davis up in that area. visibility down to 100 feet or less. it's difficult to see the road signs as you are traveling on any of your major roadways, especially in the east bay, this is southbound 680 through the san ramon valley. that is traffic and weather together. three people from the bay area are among four killed in a crash near placerville. the chp says a prius and a mini van collided head on on highway 50 last night. a man, woman and child all from san francisco died in the prius. a 4-year-old girl died in the

van. it veered into oncoming traffic and is not clear why. 31 people were killed on california streets and highways over the holiday weekend. that's ten more than a year ago. the chp says 21 people in cars were killed in its jurisdiction this year. 13 of those 21 were not wearing seat belts. here in the bay area, 6 people were killed in 5 accidents and there were 224dui arrests. a pilot from nevad o o and his passenger are recovering. the cessna was headed for john wayne airport when it lost power . the plane clipped a fence and flipped over the pilot and passenger crawled out of the wreckage and are list instead fair condition. the cause of the crash is under investigation. 5:35 now, a mystery in san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood, what was the source of carbon monoxide at a home on courtland street.

crews tried to learn how 14 people became exposed to carbon monoxide over the weekend. the fire department was called to the home at last night. >> when we arrived, we checked the residents with our air monitors and found no sign of carbon monoxide. however, we exec -- checked the residents and they had shown signs of carbon monoxide on them. >> the but aal yan but a -- it's know laughing matter, comedian cat williams and live nation are getting hit with a class action lawsuit. people who went to see her and attempted to fight audience members, no word from williams or live nation. a new pastor appointed to lead one of san francisco's

oldest african-american churches is now being rejected by its congregation. john hunter was appointed to lead bethel church. hunter has baggage from the time in la. accusations of financial issues and sexual harassment. >> if you made some mistake, fine, say you made some mistakes, but people wanted questions resolved before he took over leadership of our church. >> la times reports that hunter used the credit cards for personal expenses and that he owes the irs more than $300,000 in back taxes. last month parishioners refused to let him. the goal is the same as last week, to shop, but the venue is different today. cate cauguiran is in the news room reports that the deals are online today and apparently so are the shoppers. i think a lot of people will be

shopping at work. >> a little bit warmer, less crowded than black friday. they are anticipating 29 million shoppers to be clicking and cashing in and sales could reach a billion and a half dollars. cyber monday is the day they've been holding on to the post thanksgiving sales. what's new this year, one in four will go to mobile devices to find the best deal. that's double from last year and a trend that's expected to continue. experts say cyber monday shows that technology is changing the game for online shopping. >> online retailers have made great strides to make it easy to return things. paes on shipping labels and free shipping, oftentimes free returns and that's had to do with the increase of online shopping. even though cyber monday gets you away from the crowd, shopping is still competitive. we have tips to help you save even more money.

vessel, about 15 miles from shore. three people were on board, all jumped into the water. they were rescued by the coast guard. the yacht named bliss is partially submerged the no injuries reported but lucky people off the shore of miami. stock futures are headed lower on this monday. ashley reports on a big weekend for retailers, you can imagine ashley. >> certainly was. good morning to you. shopping habits have a ripple effect on the global economy. asian markets were up on the news to record retail numbers. hong kong was unchanged. wall street investors like the packed stores. the dow added 172 points to once again move past the 13,000 mark where the nasdaq finished up 40 points. the holiday shopping season got started in record fashion thanksgiving night and the

spending spree lasted through the weekend. a record 247 million shoppers visited stores or web sites over the four day weekend. this is an increase of more than 9% and they spent more than ever before, an estimated $59.1 billion. and retail analysts expect this cyber monday to be the biggest online shopping day of the year. they predict americans will spend one and a half billion dollars online today. that is an includes of 20% over -- increase of 20% over last year. >> did you get a lot of shopping done. >> i did a lot of shopping on friday. i wasn't planning on it. >> she has a new outfit. >> oh, shopping for yourself, are you. >> of course she is. >> i was at cost co, and i noticed that a partridge and a appear tree has gone up. -- pear tree has gone up. i was devastated. >> the price cap for the 364

hours, for now, 41 at concord, livermore 40 degrees and santa rosa 39 degrees. we're starting with the fog and will go sunny later in the day and rain will begin tomorrow night and the rain once it starts, it's not going to stop for a while. let's look at the satellite and radar, a little low pressure spun through i didn't do. the -- spun through right now. and the result is the fog. so while we started out with the overcast and the fog will go sunny, probably more sun earlier in the day today, it will stay a little bit on the chilly side. forecast in the bay areas is looking for numbers to be in the mid-60s today. 65 at vallejo, san francisco at 62. oakland at 66 degrees and down in san jose, we'll have 66. up in santa rosa, 67 degrees. it's in the extended forecast

morning, i really have not seen our traffic camera this thick of a blanket of fog across the bay bridge in quite a while. you can see some delays right now, and a few of those cash lanes, chp issued several dense fog advisories for pretty much all the bridges, including the bay bridge and this is a look at the san mateo bridge. i didn't know what this was. earlier a half hour ago you could see the san mateo bridge just fine. you never know when you're going to hit the thick wall of fog. this is westbound 92. and it is super thick now. look at that as you head out toward the high-rise. the drive time is 15 minutes between hay ward and foster city. take it extra slow. give yourself extra time. there's only one reported accident in the bay area that we're seeing north of the airport, northbound 101 motorcycle accident off to the right hand shoulder.
